Babies born alive before 37 weeks of gestation are termed premature babies. The World Health Organisation data points out that about 15 million babies are born preterm every year – that accounts to one in 10 live births! Almost one million babies are believed to lose their lives annually due to premature birth complications. According to National Health Portal, 3.5 million babies are born premature in India every year.
Premature birth and miscarriage are a nightmare of any parent-to-be. Cervical weakness – the condition where the cervix shortens and opens too early – is one of the major causes or miscarriage or preterm birth. Women who are at the risk of late miscarriage or preterm birth are advised cervical cerclage to avoid pregnancy complications.
Cervix is the opening from the uterus to the vagina. In cases of normal pregnancy, the cervix is firmly closed until the time of childbirth. But in women with weak cervix, cervix fails and tends to open soon posing a risk to the child. Cervical cerclage is the procedure to prevent premature childbirth and thereby, ill-health or death of the baby. During laparoscopic cerclage, small incisions are made in the woman’s abdomen, the surgeon reaches the cervix, which is stitched tightly. In cases of cervical incompetence in mothers-to-be, cervix is closed through the laparoscopic procedure at about 12 weeks of pregnancy, after which the baby can fully develop inside the womb itself. However, after the procedure, the mother will have to give birth through C-section.
Laparoscopic cerclage is done under anaesthesia. Two to four small incisions are made on the mother’s abdomen through which a thin tube with a lit end (laparoscope) is let in. The pictures send by the laparoscope guide the surgeon to perform the procedure. The abdomen is filled with carbondioxide to make space for proper vision and hassle-free procedure. Using surgical tools, the tissue that connects bladder and uterus is cut, providing access to the cervix. A surgical tape is tied in a knot around the cervix and the incision is stitched up.
Like all laparoscopic procedures, Laparoscopic Cerclage also comes with the advantages of lesser complications, lesser bleeding and lesser pain. But any possible risks could be the follows:
